AHS Principal, Director of Buildings & Grounds NamedWe are pleased to announce two new hires to Affton School District: Dr. Deann Myers, Affton High School Principal for the 2019-2020 school year, and Jeff Rooks, Director of Buildings & Grounds.

Dr. Deann MyersFollowing an expansive search for talent and experience, the Affton School District Board of Education on Tues., Feb. 5, approved the hiring of Dr. Deann Myers as Principal for Affton High School for the 2019-2020 school year.

“As a superintendent, I was humbled by the talented individuals that we had the good fortune to consider during our search for the next principal of Affton High School,” said Dr. Travis Bracht, superintendent of Affton Schools. “We involved staff, students, and parents in the decision-making process, and Dr. Myers was identified by all of our stakeholder groups as the top candidate for the position. I am excited to welcome her considerable skills and talents to the Affton family.”

Myers’ extensive experience in school administration includes her role as assistant principal at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School in St. Louis, Mo., since 2010. In addition to her administrative experience, Myers served as an instructional coach for one year and taught science at the high school level for eight years. Myers earned a bachelor of arts in biology education from McKendree University in Lebanon, Il., a master of science in biology education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, as well as a doctorate in educational leadership from Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo.

“I can hardly contain my excitement as I begin this journey in Affton. I look forward to spending the next few months getting to know the people behind the Affton High School legacy of excellence and letting the community get to know me,” said Myers. “Together we will continue to meet the high learning standards of the Affton community and build strong relationships conducive to a climate of integrity and innovation.”

Myers grew up near the small town of Worden, Il., where her two grown daughters currently reside. She visits them often, especially now that her saucy three-year-old granddaughter is in the mix. She lives in the Carondelet area and spends as much time outdoors as possible. She is a global traveler with a penchant for adventure.

Myers will begin serving as principal at Affton High School on July 1. She replaces Dr. Vince Powell, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Jeff RooksOn Tues., Feb. 5, the Affton School District Board of Education approved the hiring of Jeff Rooks as Director of Buildings and Grounds.

“Affton School District has had the good fortune of having steady leadership for the past 18 years in our buildings and grounds department. As we look to the future, I am excited to welcome Mr. Rooks to the Affton family,” said Dr. Travis Bracht, superintendent of Affton Schools. “I believe he will continue to provide the district with the knowledge and skills it takes to make this department strong for a long time to come.”

Rooks’ extensive experience in school facilities management includes his role as construction project manager and special crew supervisor at Parkway School District in St. Louis, Mo., since 2014. In addition to his managerial and supervisory experience, Rooks served as a plumber for 13 years at Parkway, including three years as plumbing department crew chief. He also has experience as a laborer and concrete finisher.

“Working in the public school system for close to 20 years, I have always taken pride in improving the educational environment for our children. I am excited to work with the Affton School District team to continue doing this in my home community,” said Rooks. “Our students deserve safe, clean, and innovative spaces for learning. With the collaboration of the Affton team, I look forward to helping ‘build’ future leaders.”

Jeff and his wife, Maria, a project manager for a plaintiff’s law firm in Clayton, Mo., live in Affton. They have a three-year-old daughter and a newborn son.

Rooks will begin serving as Director of Buildings and Grounds on March 11. He replaces Dave Walters, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
