2018-19 Teachers of the YearCathey Pozzo, Special School District (SSD) teacher at Gotsch Intermediate School, has been named the Affton School District’s 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year.

At an awards ceremony on April 19, Pozzo was awarded the honor. Each Affton school also named a Teacher of the Year for their building. They include Amanda Hogan for Mesnier Primary; Pozzo at Gotsch Intermediate; Jennifer DeSalme at Rogers Middle; and Dan Polokonis at Affton High School.

“At Affton School District, we believe that all students should have the opportunity to become confident and capable citizens through rigorous, customized learning. It is my privilege to work with such a highly talented staff from both Affton and Special School District who are dedicated to meeting the individual needs of each of our children,” said Dr. Steve Brotherton. “I am impressed by Cathey, and her deep commitment to the students she serves.”

Cathey PozzoPozzo has been teaching in Affton for 12 years is working toward a master’s degree in communication arts and becoming a certified reading specialist. On the application for Teacher of the Year, one of Pozzo's colleagues states, “She does not give up, ever. Students and parents should know that Cathey is their greatest supporter. Cathey is always thinking about how to improve herself as a teacher and how she can squeeze the most success and progress from her students.”

Pozzo believes that her most significant professional accomplishment has been the honor of being named as Gotsch Teacher of the Year, becoming the second teacher in SSD’s history that was recognized by their partner district as a building teacher of the year.

She explains, “As a teacher, I have the ability to strengthen and improve the teaching profession by advocating for and empowering teachers to find their strengths, better themselves, and continue to make a difference. The more teachers that are supported, equipped, and empowered, the more change we see in education. I attempt to do this by both mentoring new teachers and serving as a voice and a help to all teachers.”

Hogan, the Mesnier Primary School Teacher of the Year, has worked in the Affton School District for three years and is currently a first-grade teacher.
DeSalme, the Rogers Middle School Teacher of the Year, has been teaching in the Affton School District for eight years and currently teaches social studies to eighth-grade students.
Polokonis, the Affton High School Teacher of the Year, is a math teacher and sponsor of the Mathlete and TEAMS (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) clubs, and has been in the Affton School District for eight years.
